Check out this great video explaining the underlying technology of Cardinal glass.
When searching for new window options for your home, it's important to consider how well the glass performs in extreme temperatures like Canadian winters, and the amount of light that enters your home. We provide various options to best suit your comfort needs and preferences, Understanding U-factors and solar heat gain will help you make an informed decision.
U-Factors:
U-factors (or U-values) are values ranging from 0.20-1.20. This value describes how well the glass insulates, or transfers heat into the house. Lower U-values are better at insulating by transfering less heat across the glass.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC):
SHGC values measure howe well the glass keeps solar heat outside of the house, to keep your house from overheating on a particularly sunny day. These values range from 0-1, where glass with lower SHGC's (closer to 0) are better at keeping solar heat outside of your home. Typically, the best insulating windows feature the lowest U-factors and SHGC ratings.
Cardinal LowE-180 glass is a great solution for cold weather. This glass has a 0.26 U-factor insulation rating, and lets sun rays into the home (SHGC 0.69) all while blocking 71% of UV rays.
Cardinal LowE-272 glass is a great al-weather glass solution. This double-pane, argon-filled glass delivers an SHGC of 0.41 and a U-factor of 0.25, which transmits 72% of visible light while blocking 85% of harmful UV rays.
Cardinal LowE-366 glass is the most insulating option available. The additional clear coating reflects heat exceptionally while allowing natural light in. This glass blocks 95% of harmful UV rays, with an SHGC of 0.27 and a U-factor of 0.24.
Cardinal LowE-i89 glass offers a smooth, scratch-resistant option that highly reflects heat to keep your home warm and maintain high energy efficiency performance. This high-performance glass scores a U-factor of 0.21 and an SHGC of 0.62.
With three layers of glass, these window types are the optimal choice for saving energy and reducing noise. Glass layers are coated with LowE, and feature spacers filled with argon gas and foam Super Spacers to contribute to the energy performance of these windows.
Any of our decorative glass options (pictured below) are great options for allowing natural light into a space while blocking the inside view from the outside of your home.
